Common Noun
is a word (such as “singer,” “ocean,” or “car”) that refers to a person, place, or thing but that is not the name of a particular person, place, or thing.
It actually is the 'category label' for things. Let say 'car' is the common noun for a Honda civic, and a 'Honda civic' is the proper noun for a car. It's like asking your self what kind of car do I like? A Ferrari or a Porsche?
Comparing common noun with proper nouns makes it more easy to understand. Let say, a common noun is the 'type' of object and proper noun is the 'example' of that type. A type of structure: building, an example of a building: World Trade Center.
*Take note that common nouns usually written in small letter while proper nouns are written with a capital letter. This rule often applies wherever the noun is placed in the sentence except at the beginning of a sentence where all should be written with a capital letter.
